longing & belonging & Grace ~ Sea & Spirit & Silence (No. 3)

Saying For Today: Love, as all else, is expressed by the embrace, more or less, of consciousness, expanding from matter, increasing to an embrace beyond even embrace, Spirit.

Stage Island

Sitting on the rocky shore, by the Atlantic, quiet and receptive to the beauty, far-off horizon, vastness and movement of waters, small islands of rock jutting from the depths to surface, birds standing or flying, and a small fishing boat traversing the surf, I heard. I bowed, folded hands, in reverence of the sea, and heard. Following the rite of awe, an inarticulate revelation arose, hearing with heart for arising from Heart. "Friend."

This ephiphanic moment inspired this series of reflections on belonging, longing, and Grace. I knew a belonging, sitting with the ocean, a being-with the sea. This was not about being beside the sea, and this would not have been spoken of being in it, if I had been covered within the sea depths. This was a prior belonging, one I have written of over the last days, one not of physical proximity.

What impressed itself upon me most was not just belonging, but somehow, I belonged-with this immense body of waters, we belonged-together, were together, are communion, as much so as with any human. In Grace, the waters and I were, are, blessed with friendship, in that timeless moment.

And this revelation was not arising from the mind, such as might be spoken by a nature lover or pagan, articulating a sentimental love of nature. Love, as it moves "from" Spirit, Grace, into less embracing forms of Itself, is not sentimental, for not an emotion, is not a concept, but prior to the thought or emotion of love ~ this is a reason I often capitalize love, Love.

So, this spontaneous revelation of friendship, not grounded in mind or feeling, from whence did it arise? As noted in the conclusion to the last in this series, we will proceed to look more into this Ground of belonging, and what leads from and to It.
